Who are the targeted users ?
I then decided to spot some local business online and connect with people on Social Media to schedule some interviews hoping I could observe their process, behaviors, and pain points.

Fortunately for this project, I managed to gather even more precious data having after getting some replies on Social media and small businesses around me who accepted to answer my questions. This was a good way notably for me to have more insights on local business, goals, or frustrations with re-opening.

Problem identified

In the early months of 2020, Pandemic prompted wide-sweeping shutdowns and shelter in place orders across the world.

As the country looks to start relaxing these strict measures, small business owners need to think about what's next and how they will adapt and move forward safely and sustainably
-
"The level of contact with customers and other employees" (eg: beauty salons and gyms with direct physical contact vs retail stores and restaurants with direct contact)

Reopening and adjusting to the "new normal" will involve several steps for businesses to take, from researching, communicating, and executing plans to pivoting strategically
Pain-Points and Opportunities
After conducting these interviews, here are the frustrations and difficulties I noted for the employees

When brick-and-mortar businesses are able to reopen their doors, consumers may be worried about being in an enclosed space with other individuals, regardless of the health and safety protocols in place.

Even digital businesses that have remained fully operational may find it difficult to boost sales with so many customers facing lost or limited income.

As a business owner, the primary concern should be the health and safety of your employees and customers.

All places of business, including shops, restaurants, construction sites, and offices, must take precautions to reduce the risk on-premises.

Design Challenges
These challenges bring together a blend of product design, experience design, and service design problems that are desperate for a solution, and design thinking can help.
With advanced technology, the distribution of information isn’t the problem. It’s transmitting the right information to the right people at the right time.
Taking the design thinking phases of empathizing, define, and ideate, this rapid response team of designers could assist authorities with formulating the right kind of messaging.
Widespread testing and contact tracing are needed to identify and alert people who have come into contact with a person infected with the coronavirus.
Under empathizing and defining, we can understand the problem; with ideation and prototyping, we can explore the most cost-effective way to make them; and with testing and implementation, we can refine and deliver an effective solution.
At this stage of my research, I could then prioritize and define the problems my mobile application would try to solve and how I would approach it.

Creating a visual identity to my product
Visitz had to feel like an easy, simple, and delightful app, as shown in the interviews. I had to keep in mind it had to do with Safety and should also feel like a reliable and safe place for the users. I first used the emotions of colors as a start to decide on my color palette and make sure my interface would impact my user in the right way, and then could create my style tile :

Visitz offers a simple solution to Businesses the need to demonstrate empathy for their customers and employees to convey a feeling of safety in the workspace.

The beginning of my research taught me that approaching interviewees is not always easy but, perseverance is key to get insights that are primordial to make any design decisions.
-
As any designer with a deadline, I also had to prioritize on the work I wanted to get done for this project like as per users needs I had to make clips for the safety alerts feature, add direct calling to customers, etc...: I wish later on to go deeper in my research to get to know more of the managers’ frustrations and improve my interface from their perspective.

Creating a visual design for Visitz was a journey as it was challenging to make it connect with the users’ needs to current pandemic situations and making sure it fits as a useful, smart, and beautiful product.
